A Little about myself

I'm the second of eight children. My Dad is a computer programer. I don't remember not having a computer at home. I've lived in Sacramento my whole life...except two years near Washington, D.C. serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I am currently a student at American River College, trying to map out a career path. I've always been very interested in computers as well as architecture. I am currently taking Web Publishing, Internet Scripting, and AutoCAD classes to further explore my career options.

My computer experience

I come from an Apple family. Raised on an Apple II E, writing AppleSoft BASIC programs as child. We have many Apple branded computers now. Friends and relatives have given us their old Apple II stuff as they decided they were no longer useful to them. We've also added Macs to the family--Performa 550, Performa 6300 CD, and iMac (bondi blue). My dream machine right now is the G4 Cube with an Apple Cinema Display.

I have experience with Wintel (Windows/Intel) boxes too (who hasn't); although, I haven't had as much opportunity to tinker with them. I do not like Microsoft. Recent reading has interested me in UNIX environments--especially Linux. I felt like a kid in a candy shop the first time we logged into our server in my Internet Scripting class.

What I know about the Web and Web publishing

I've wanted to create a web site for a long time. I just didn't know what I wanted to put on the web. The free open sharing of the Internet atracts me. About a year ago I finally got an idea for a web site--a guide to local thrift stores. I've started building the site, but need to learn more to add the interactive features I want. Visit my site: SacThrift: The online guide to Thrift Stores in Sacramento.

Why I am taking this class...

The first reason I became interested in this class was to further my work on SacThrift. I've also been thinking about actually finding a job using web publishing/programing skills; although, I haven't done much about it yet. I'm sure I'd do well in the field, but I worry about how long the current boom in web jobs will last. Everyone seems to be interested in the Internet and Wall Street is begining to realize that tacking a .com to the end of a company name doesn't make it an instant success.
